Reflection in the Maths Block
Reflection in is the third part of the series in our look at how Maths is structured at St Francis Xavier. Reflection happens throughout the Maths block and always at the end of the learning time. It is a time to notice and explore the mathematics that has been experienced and cannot be totally pre-planned.
During the reflection phase there is a balance of teacher talk, student talk, partner talk and quiet reflective moments. It is a time for making connections between prior knowledge and new learning. Students are actively encouraged to articulate their mathematical thinking and understanding, and to write or draw in a reflective journal or a page in their learning journals.

On Thursday, 18 March the Mini Vinnies group will be hosting a day to raise money for Project Compassion. Students may wear mufti, or dress as someone who inspires them to ‘Be More’ (the theme for this year’s Project Compassion campaign). Students are asked to bring along a gold coin donation and any loose change for a money line. Be sure to check out the Facebook page for photos and interviews on the day!
Meet the Teachers Evening
High Potential Learning (HPL) visit to St John Paul College
On Monday we had another great session at St John Paul College . We began the day by warming up with some mathematical tasks. We learnt about square numbers and the square root of numbers and how they are related (they are the opposite). We also looked at their symbols, how these can be used in equations and how these equations can be used to predict solutions to everyday problems. We felt very clever!
We had a fabulous task given to us, called a ‘Wiki Quest’. This was a partner challenge where each of us had to choose an area of interest or a passion. One of us was the ‘start’ and the other was the ‘finish’. Our challenge was to take two unrelated topics and join these concepts in 5 steps (hyperlinks) or less. We then visited the website, Wikipedia and typed in our ‘start’ word and clicked on the hyperlinks in a quest to find a related topic which would eventually lead us to our ‘finish’ word. We then used this information to create a Canva poster to show the links between our concepts.
It was another sensational session of learning and fun with Mr Holmes!

Digital Technologies Usage Agreement
Further to the emails sent to families on Friday, 26 February and today, Friday, 12 March, to allow children in the school to use our computers and network it is necessary for every child to understand the conditions of use and then agree to those conditions.
Attached is our Digital Technologies Student Procedure that we ask all parents/guardians to please read through with your child/ren.
Once your child/ren understand the content we then ask for you to complete the online Agreement (link below). The school will automatically receive this on completion.
Please complete one online Agreement for each child.
We ask that this be completed by Wednesday, 17 March 2021.
