Rich Tasks

Continuing the Maths focus and following on from Warm Ups we wanted to share with you the next phase of our maths block, Rich Tasks. Rich Tasks provide opportunities for students to struggle with ideas and to develop and use an increasingly sophisticated range of mathematical processes (for example, justification, abstraction, reasoning and generalisation). The tasks are rich, real and relevant and have a problem solving context and are usually open ended. The tasks engage students in extended learning experiences that highlight mathematical thinking, investigation and problem solving. You may hear your children come home and say that they were “in the pit today”. This refers to the learning pit, a place where lots of learning and thinking takes place. It is a frame of reference to help structure metacognitive reflection for students. You may wish to ask the children to share a rich task with you, I’m sure they would love to have you in the pit with them.

Wildfire

On Wednesday and Thursday this week we had the awesome privilege of hosting the Proclaim Lismore Worship Band, Wildfire. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 were treated to an exciting and energising program of live music, song, dance, small groups, talks, drama and prayer, focusing on the theme of ‘friendship with Jesus’ run by Youth Ministry Officers from high schools in our Diocese. It was wonderful to welcome back ex-students Joey Varney and Patrick Whittaker as part of the YMO team. Energy levels were high amongst students and staff as they grooved along to contemporary Christian tunes (many of which are original songs by Wildfire) and shared their thoughts, questions and experiences of our greatest friend and teacher, Jesus Christ.

‘It was really, really, really, really, really good! I loved it! I learned that even when people are unkind, God loves you and wants to be friends with you.’ Ben, Year 6

‘200 out of 10! It was amazing. The singers were really good and it was heaps of fun.’ Pypa, Year 5

‘I loved the small groups. We wrote a prayer.’ Noor, Year 3

‘I loved it. Even though we couldn’t sing along, it was fun because we could dance. The YMOs made it really fun. They showed us how to show God’s light.’ Bonnie H, Year 4

‘I liked how they sang. They taught us that God is sending us a message every day. He’s inviting us to be his friend.’ Edie, Year 2

‘I liked the games. They were funny.’ Eli and Chaise, Kindergarten
